IN MEMORY

James B. Christensen - Class Of 1953

James B. Christensen, age 90 (pictured at right from the 1953 Spy), passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

He was born on April 21, 1935, in Kenosha, WI, to Mollie Heg Christensen and Just Boyd Christensen. His father was born in Bjerringbro, Denmark, immigrated to the United States at age 17 through Ellis Island, and was proud to become a United States citizen. His mother was born in Russia and moved to Canada as a baby before settling in Wisconsin.

James attended Bradford High School in Kenosha. After graduation, he moved to Chicago, where he began his banking career at First National Bank of Chicago. He later continued his career with American National Bank in Chicago, where he worked faithfully until his retirement.

He proudly served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany in the early 1950s.

On October 19, 1956, he married Darlene Virginia Amundsen. Together they built a life centered on faith, family and steady commitment that spanned nearly 70 years.  James and Darlene were active members of Faith Lutheran Church during their years in Chicago and later of Nativity Lutheran Church after relocating to Florida. Their faith was a constant foundation throughout their marriage and family life.

James and Darlene raised three children:  Jeffrey Brian Christensen (Kathy "Kat"), David Christensen (Donna) and Cathy Christensen (Randy Grahme).

James was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey; his older sister, Mollie "Tina" Nighsonger and her husband, Clifford; his sister Georgianne Sampson and her husband, Jack; his brother, Robert Christensen and his wife, Carole; and his brother, Ron Christensen, who was married to Pat.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene; his children David (Donna) and Cathy (Randy); his grandchildren Justen (Sarah), Jessica (Mark), Erik (Monica), Ian, Josiah, Jenna and Kelsa; and his great-grandchildren Jayden, Alice and Amalia.

Prior to age and health limiting his mobility, James enjoyed spending time on the golf course with friends and with Darlene by his side. He was a devoted football fan of both the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers, and he especially enjoyed teasing his grandson, Justen, when the Bears were struggling. He also loved gathering around the table to play Cribbage, Euchre and Hearts – simple games that brought laughter, friendly competition and time together.

James was a steady and faithful man – devoted to his wife, proud of his children and grandchildren and quietly grateful for the life he was given. His presence, strength, humor and unwavering commitment to family will be deeply missed. He now rests in the arms of his Savior.
