Wilhelm Winzer Grant Program for KUSD Elementary Teachers

This page was updated on 01/10/2026.

Background.  In July 2023, for Kris Winzer Miller’s 50th class reunion, she and husband Larry Miller donated funds to KBHSAA to establish a Building and Construction Trades Scholarship in the amount of $1973 honoring Kris’ late father, Wilhelm Winzer, a carpenter, craftsman and immigrant from Croatia/former Yugoslavia, arriving in Kenosha in 1959.

As no Bradford HS seniors met the criteria for the scholarship in 2024 or 2025, Kris and Larry have increased the funding to $2500 and, through KBHSAA, offered (10) $250 grants to KUSD elementary school teachers for the 2025-26 school year.  On October 30, we had said we would soon announce the list of Winzer Grant recipients.

A Belated Update.  In a surprise move, Kris and Larry doubled the funds available for the Wilhelm Winzer Grant Program to award (20) $250 grants, because there were so many worthy grant requests.  Kris had visited with each of the recipients of the Winzer Grants in late October and early November.  All the recipients were very grateful, and they shared some the items they planned to purchase with the grant they received:

  • Creating Science centers
  • Lighted table for visually impaired students
  • Recess equipment for kids to play with
  • Adding to classroom libraries
  • Help pay for class to go to Discovery Museum
  • T-shirts for Safety Patrol members
  • Building toys for Kindergarten
  • Science family night
  • Rug for seating Kindergarten children, which helps them find their own space, making it easier to be organized, manage space and learn (pictured above);
  • Coats, mittens, hats and boots for children
  • Instruments
  • Props for end of poetry unit
  • Endless need for school supplies

It is now the second week of January, and we’re still marveling at how fast November and December flew by.  Kris shared photos of the recipients (below) this week.

Congratulations Winzer Grant recipients – and thank you for being a teacher!
