Donald Spence - Class Of 1956

Donald Spence, age 87, of Pardeeville, WI, formerly of Kenosha, WI, passed away April 2, 2025 at home with his children by his side.  Donald was born on November 23, 1937 in Pleasant Prairie, WI to Donald and Lenora Spence.

Donald attended Kenosha schools where he graduated from Kenosha High School's class of 1956.  Upon graduation Donald joined the US Navy where he served in the Naval Air Corps on the Carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.  

On February 21, 1959 he married Shirley Gename.  They raised four children in their 56 years of marriage.

Upon returning home from Naval service, Don studied computer programming at Gateway Technical Institute.  His training led him to a career in computers where he worked as a Program Analyst, Systems Analyst, and retired as the Computer Security Administrator for J.I. Case. 

Don was active in organizations throughout his life.  He was a member of the Kenosha Wheelman, as well as a founding member of Kenosha Velosport.  He was also active in the Pardeeville Lions Club, Meals on Wheels and Badger Antique Car Club.  

Don also enjoyed many lifelong endeavors.  He was a cyclist, racing in his early years and touring throughout his life.  He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting.  Don was a skilled craftsman enjoying woodworking, electrical, and plumbing projects where he put his skills to work on a mission trip to Africa.  He was also passionate about vintage and custom cars, of which he had owned many throughout his life.  He most enjoyed sharing and passing down these loves to his children.   

Don was a member and raised his family at First Christian Church in Kenosha/Pleasant Prairie where he has served as a Deacon and Elder.  More recently, he attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Pardeeville

Don is survived by his four children:  Kathleen Duffy (Michael) of Pardeeville, David Spence (Karen Schutz) of Pleasant Prairie, Michael Spence (Linda Meintzer) of Spring Grove, IL, and Jeffrey Spence (Karen Statz) of Sussex, WI.  Donald is further survived by 12 grandchildren:  Joshua Duffy (Niki), Julie Duffy, Jeffrey Duffy (Christina), Jamie Spence (Natalie), Christopher Spence (Elizabeth), Sarah Spence (Dan Hermes), Samantha Knauer (Andrew), Jacob Spence (Emelia), Dustin Spence (Taylor Fuqua), Nicole Fricano (Nick), Danielle Spence, and Jennifer Spence (Aaron Below).  He is also survived by his eight great grandchildren:  Izzy Duffy, Elliott Duffy, Elijah Duffy, Jordon Jacobs, Serena Jacobs, Trevor Spence, Charlie Larson and Ella Grace. In addition, Donald is survived by a very special and life-long friend of our family, Vera Mancini.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Spence; grandson, Lucas Spence; parents, Donald and Lenora Spence; and stepfather, James Spence.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 11:00AM at Grace Presbyterian Church in Pardeeville with Rev. Chuck Walton officiating. A visitation will be held at 10:00AM until the time of service on Friday. Another memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11:00AM at First Christian Church in Pleasant Prairie with Rev. David Vinyard officiating. A visitation will be held Saturday, April 26 at 10:00AM until the time of service. Don will be laid to rest at South Bristol Cemetery in Bristol, WI.

Memorials may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, First Christian Church, or charity of your choice. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested a donation may be given to one of the above-named charities.
