Gary Lee Shaver, age 56, passed away at St. Mary’s Medical Center on Tuesday, June 20, 1995. He was born in Quasqueton, IA on March 4, 1939, to Rollins J. and Thelma Shaver (nee: Goins). He was educated in the schools of Iowa and was a 1961 graduate of Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA with degrees in Education and English.
Mr. Shaver was a Radio Announcer in Iowa and taught high school Speech in Olwein and Wellman, IA before coming to Mary D. Brandford High School in 1966, where he was instrumental in the development of Speech, Drama, Forensics and TV Production. From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, he served as Public Address Announcer for the Bradford and Tremper High School football games and worked at WLIP in Kenosha. He demonstrated his acting abilities by performing with the Lakeside Players and Patretti Productions in Kenosha. Mr. Shaver chaperoned several student educational groups on European tours, including visits to Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy and England.
In Kenosha on May 28, 1993, Gary was united in marriage to Sherri Pilligor. He was a loving husband and father, a devoted son and brother, a loyal friend and a compassionate educator. He was a member of the US Army Reserves at Fort Sheridan and held the rank of First Sergeant. His active duty included one year of service in Germany and two years at Fort Sill, OK. He received the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal in 1992 and the Army Achievement Medal in 1994. He received the Distinguished Service Award in 1994 from the Kenosha Unified School District.
Surviving are his wife, Sherri Shaver; son, Lee Jacob Shaver of Kenosha; two stepsons, Sean McFarlane and Ryan Mooney, both of Sturtevant, WI; daughter, Lourian Dawn Shaver of Milwaukee, WI; and brothers, Harold Shaver of Washington, IA and Paul Shaver of Urbana, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece. He will be sadly missed by Clete Fuenffinger, Roger Stasik, Lynne Galvin, Sheryl Brinkmann, Teri Wilkinson and Aurora Labrador.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM on Friday, June 23, 1995, from First Congregational Church in Kenosha, WI. Interment will follow in Sunset Ridge Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 12:00PM until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made to the Gary Lee Shaver Communication Arts Scholarship Fund.
