David Gottlieb - Class Of 1937

David S. Gottlieb passed away at his Boulder home on October 17, 2008, aged 89 years.

He was born on April 24, 1919, and raised in Kenosha, WI and graduated from the University of Chicago, where he met his wife Pearl Claire (PC). David and PC enjoyed a loving and affectionate marriage of 58 years.

During World War II, he was in the US Army and served in Europe. Afterwards, he studied at the New School for Social Research and then at Charles University in Prague. He was a stringer for UP and the New York Times, making the first broadcast to the United States of the 1948 coup in Czechoslovakia. They then lived in the Austrian Tyrol and moved to Colorado in 1952.

David was the director of an environmental school in Boulder and became a water rights engineer, working for the Denver Water Board and in private practice.

David was an avid hiker and climber. In 1962, in response to the President’s challenge, he and friends made the first 50-mile hike which traversed the mountains. He was an officer of the local chapter of the Colorado Mountain Club. He remained active outdoors until his passing, taking a daily walk into the foothills.

His was involved in civic affairs, with special interests in planning and Boulder’s growth.

David is survived by sons Jared (of Boulder), Amos (San Francisco), and Peter and Peter’s partner Tamara (Los Angeles). He was preceded in death by his wife, PC, in 2004; his sisters, Janice and Dolores; and daughter-in-law, Ruth.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the BCH Foundation or EFAA.
