Emory Mischler - Class Of 1933

N. Emory Mischler, 96, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, Friday, January 7, 2011 at Harmony Assisted Living.

He was born on January 1, 1915 to the late Nicholas P. and Margaret H. (Belting) Mischler in Kenosha.  He was educated in St. George’s School, Washington Jr. High School, Kenosha High School, Kenosha College of Commerce and Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago.

Upon graduation in 1935 from Mortuary Science College, he was employed by his father at Mischler’s Home for Funerals (708 57th Street, Kenosha).  Upon his father’s death on January 15, 1947, he formed a partnership with his mother in the operation of the business. On August 1, 1967 he became the sole owner and proprietor of the funeral business. The funeral home received an award for 50 years continuous membership in the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce.  On July 15, 1977 he married Gloria F. Macher at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  She preceded him in death in 1998.

On August 1, 1979, he sold the business and funeral home to Paul A. Lendman, and the name was changed to Lendman-Mischler Funeral Home.  Upon retiring on August 1, 1979, he and his wife split their time between Kenosha and Bradenton, FL.  


His hobbies in his earlier years consisted of stamp and coin collecting, avid Packer fan, gardening; taking care of his lawn and flowerbeds and his Doberman, Princess. He enjoyed playing cards with family members; watching and feeding various birds, rabbits and squirrels in his backyard. Emory loved dining out, especially Friday evenings with his sister.

He is a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Honorary Life Member of Knights of Columbus Council #973 3rd Degree and received the 1965 Service Award from the council. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters St. Thomas Court #753 for over 50 years. Past president and life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1055. Life member of the Kenosha Bradford Alumni Association. Emory was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association; member of the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association and past president from 1961 to 1962. Member of the Southeast Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association. On May 14, 1986 he received a Certificate of Recognition for 50 years of service and in 2006 was awarded a plaque for 70 years of service in the funeral industry. He was a member of the Kenosha Humane Society and Past President of Kenosha Optimist Club. Emory was one of the organizers and investors of Sheridan Nursing Home and the Crown Manor Nursing Home of Zion, IL. He invested in several real estate properties in Kenosha and Bradenton, FL.

Emory is survived by his children:  Aleida L. (Rudi Humpf) Peterson of Plantation, FL, Margaret B. Taylor of Racine, Drs. Nicholas E. (Elaine) Mischler of Waunakee, WI and John F. Mischler of Kenosha County; his three grandchildren:  Kristen A. (Jason) Goodman and their children, Kylie Aleida, Grant Nicholas and Payton Layne of Cary, NC; Rachel L. (Lt. Col. DJ Walsh) and their children Andrew David, Luke James and Matthew Daniel of Penn Valley, CA; and Ray L. (Carrie) Peterson II and daughter Taylor Marie of Plantation, FL; his sister Helen M. Larsen of Kenosha; and his niece and nephews, John L. (Julie) Larsen of Winfield, IL, Ruth (Donald) Fugate of Kenosha, Ray E. (Deborah) Larsen of Kenosha and Jeff (Janet) Larsen of Menomonee Falls.

He is preceded in death by two sisters Aleida M. Mischler and Ruth A. Mischler and brother-in-law Jack L. Larsen.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Emory will be held on Friday, January 14 at 12:00 Noon at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church (4816 – 7th Ave.). Entombment will follow at All Saints Mausoleum. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at the Bruch Funeral Home and again on Friday morning from 11:00AM until the time of Mass at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Memorials would be appreciated to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
