Grace Hitzker (Hughes) - Class Of 1939

Grace E. Hughes, 90, of Kenosha, died at Brookside Care Center, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, December 13, 2012.

Born on March 18, 1922 in Kenosha, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Grace (Bermingham) Hitzker.  Grace attended St. James Catholic Grade School and was a graduate of Kenosha High School.

On June 17, 1944, at St. James Catholic Church, Kenosha, she was united in marriage to William E. Hughes, Jr.  Sadly, he preceded her in death in 2007.

For many years, Grace was the dedicated office manager at St. Joseph High School.  She retired in 1981.  Previously she was employed as a secretary at Kenosha Family Service and Racine Family Service.

She was a member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, having served as a lector.  She had served as secretary and as a member of the Welcome Committee of St. Mark Christian Women.  She was also a member of St. Mark Home and School and a volunteer in the Learning Center.

She is survived by her two daughters, Grace (David) McCune of Kenosha, and Kathleen (John) Murry of Waukesha; and her son, Bill (Peggy) Hughes, of Mequon.  Grace is further survived by eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and a sister, Julie Paine of Texas.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marion Mulledy, and a brother, Richard, in infancy.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 17, 2012.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.  Private interment will be held in St. James Cemetery.  A visitation for Grace will be held at the church on Monday from 10:00AM until the time of the Mass.  In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances to one of the following would be appreciated by the family:

  • St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 7117 14th Ave., Kenosha, WI 53143;
  • St. Joseph Catholic Academy, 2401 69th St., Kenosha, WI 53143; or
  • A charity of your choice.
