IN MEMORY

Carol Chambers (Jornt) - Class Of 1929

Carol M. Jornt, 98 (pictured at right from the 1929 Spy), longtime former resident of Kenosha, WI currently residing in Loveland, CO passed away peacefully at her home on December 10, 2009.

Born in a little log cabin on Washington Island, WI on November 28, 1911, Carol was the first of three children born to Lena and Walter Chambers.  When Carol was 12 years old, the Chambers family moved from the Island to Kenosha, where Carol continued her schooling while helping out with the family fishing business.  She graduated high school in 1929 at the beginning of the Great Depression, and went on to business school in Milwaukee, while continuing to work in the family business.  It was at this time she met a young electrician names Roger Jornt.  Their first date was the last day of the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1934.  After dating for five years, they were married in 1939.  They had two daughters, Edith born in 1942 and Ellen born in 1945.  In 1976, Roger tragically died of cancer, and Carol was offered his position on the Kenosha County Board of Supervisors.  She accepted and went on to run for two additional terms before stepping down in order to travel.

Carol received multiple awards of appreciation for her 32 years of service with Mobile Meals and also as a volunteer Escort driver.  She distinguished herself as a true servant of the people of Kenosha County through her contributions on the County Board of Supervisors and her commitment to the elderly and disabled through her volunteer service with Kenosha Homecare.

Carol was, by anyone’s definition, truly one of the Points of Light and a citizen to be emulated by everyone for generations to come.

She is survived by:  her sister, Ruby Anderson, of Cheshire, CT; two daughters, Edith Jensen (Jay) of Surprise, AZ, and Ellen Nelson (George) of Loveland, CO; her four grandchildren, Christian Jensen (Barbara), Carolyn Jensen-Engel (Scott), Jamie Nelson and Ian Nelson; and her great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Jensen-Engel.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Lena and Walter Chambers; her husband, Roger; and her brother, Wally Chambers.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection (322 Ohio St., Racine) on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 2:00PM.

At Carol’s request, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Hillcrest Project Linus, 535 N. Douglas Ave., Loveland, CO 80537.
