Roger Smith - Class Of 1948

Roger Dermot Smith, 84, passed away at his residence after a brief illness on Tuesday, December 16, 2014.  He was born March 31, 1930, in Kenosha, WI to the late Dermot Albert and Luella Johana Langenbach Smith.  He was married to Shirley Mae Disotell Smith for 63 years.

Roger had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and retired from Eaton Corporation after 36 years. He was committed to community service:  a member of the Lyons Club of Sanford; sat on the board at Twin Lakes Community and was a dedicated volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Sanford and Alamance County for over 16 years. Roger was an extraordinary craftsman with a passion for woodworking, creating ornate wooden boxes and furniture.

Survivors include his wife Shirley; sons:  Jeffrey Smith and his wife, Catherine, of Middletown, DE, and Guy Smith and his wife, Jane, of Waukesha, WI; brothers:  Gene Smith of Kenosha, Pastor Lowell Smith and his wife, Nancy, of San Diego, CA; and three grandchildren:  Gregory Smith of Oakland, CA, Emma Smith of Minneapolis, MN and Benjamin Smith with the U.S. Navy and his wife, Toni.

A Memorial Service was held on Friday, December 19 at 1 p.m. at May-Foley Chapel, Twin Lakes Community, with a reception following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Roger's name to Habitat for Humanity of Alamance County (317 E. Sixth Street, Burlington, NC 27215) or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell (918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215).
