Robert “Bob” Richards, a decorated United States military veteran, respected business leader, devoted philanthropist, beloved father, grandfather, long-time partner, brother and friend, passed away at his home in Highland, Michigan, on February 18, 2026. He was 82 years old.
Bob is survived by his loving family: son, Brian Sinta (Deb), granddaughters Katie and Annabelle; brother, Mike Richards (Susie), whom he loved dearly and enjoyed a life-long friendship; nieces Sarah, Maryanne and Lauren. He is survived by his loving partner of 19 years, Sherry Reilly. They walked side by side through life. Traveling, sharing excellent food and wine, laughing often and enjoying every moment. They often said how lucky they were to have met. Bob loved spending time with his family in Steamboat Springs, sailing the BVI’s, vacationing with Sherry in Maui, fly fishing adventures with his friends and being at home on his porch overlooking beautiful Dunham Lake. He especially loved his large group of devoted friends. He connected with them often, and they were amongst the most important parts of his life.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 years, Sandy Richards. They had found their soulmate’s and shared a magical life together. Not a day passed that he didn’t think about their life together and the joy they experienced.
Bob was born in Kenosha, WI, on March 3, 1943. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and was promptly drafted into the United States Army. His first flight on an airplane was to Vietnam. Bob was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served his country with honor and distinction. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery, and his military service remained a pillar that reflected the same quiet strength, humility and integrity that would define his character throughout his life.
Following his military service, Bob went on to build a distinguished career in the mortgage industry. He served as CEO of Manufacturers Hannover Mortgage and Fireman’s Fund, where he helped expand access to homeownership for working families across the country. For 30 years he served on the Board of Directors of Radian, where he was widely respected for his leadership, judgment and commitment to responsible lending practices.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was a lifelong philanthropist with a deep passion for helping others. He believed firmly in medical research and protecting our natural environment. Bob spent much of his life supporting charitable and community-based initiatives. After Sandy’s death he created an endowment for the University of Michigan neuro-oncology department to fund brain tumor research and improve patient outcomes.
Bob was, in every sense, a giant amongst men. He dedicated his life to service, knowledge, moral clarity, charity and friendship. He loved life to its fullest, bringing joy and happiness into the countless lives he touched. He led by example, and his influence will live on in the lives he touched, the communities he strengthened and the family he so dearly loved.
