James “Jim” Raymond Dunn, cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully, at the age of 96, on September 30, 2024. Born on May 9, 1928, in Kenosha, WI, Jim led a life rich in love, service, and adventure. Raised in the Catholic faith, Jim served as an altar boy in his youth, and his faith remained a guiding light throughout his life. He embraced the values of prayer and spirituality, which shaped his character and deepened his relationships.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Jim served for two years in Japan as part of the occupying force after World War II. This pivotal experience instilled in him a profound appreciation for peace and understanding. He often shared stories from this time, imparting lessons about compassion and connection that resonated with those around him. In a fitting tribute, he participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, DC, last year, honoring his military service; this was made possible by the Honor Flight volunteer organization https://www.honorflight.org/.
Jim was a devoted family man, leaving behind seven beloved children: Maura, Dana, Craig, Sean, Paula, Jimmy, and Christopher. He was also a loving stepfather to Cat, Ralph, Laura, and Lizzy, who enriched his family further. His greatest joy was being a husband and father, and he cherished the time spent with his family, creating memories filled with laughter and love. Jim was first married to Patricia Ann Dunn for 16 years, sharing the joys and challenges of raising their seven children. Later, he found love again with Signe Ann Dunn, with whom he was married to for 34 wonderful years, until her passing on September 16, 2020. They resided in San Diego, CA. Together, they explored the world and the beauty of the United States, creating unforgettable memories that will be forever treasured.
A man of many passions, Jim enjoyed hiking in nature, relishing the beauty of the outdoors and the adventures it offered. He was also an avid bridge player, delighting in evenings spent with Signe Ann and friends around the card table. These gatherings were not just about the game but about the camaraderie and connections he fostered. Even in later years, Jim remained a lifelong learner, delighting in reading high school physics and chemistry books for enjoyment.
Jim had a profound love for aviation, complementing his career in the aerospace marketing field. With a degree in electrical engineering, he dedicated much of his professional life to advancing the industry he was passionate about. His expertise and enthusiasm left a lasting impact on those he worked with. Jim is survived by his seven children, three stepchildren, eleven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of love, kindness, and curiosity.
A military service was held on Monday, November 18, 2024, at 9:30AM at Miramar National Cemetery, followed by a gathering to celebrate his life and the many memories he created with those he loved. In lieu of flowers, our family requests donations be made to Jewish Family Services (htps://www.jfssd.org/ways-to-give/) in Jim’s honor (they were a big help in his time of need).
James Raymond Dunn was an exceptional human being and will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, deep love for family, and zest for life. His warmth, kindness, and sense of humor left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Jim’s legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to cross his path, reminding us to embrace every moment with gratitude and joy. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
