Richard "Dick" Johnston - Class Of 1938

Richard Derold "Dick" Johnston, 86, of Kenosha, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2006.  Born in Milwaukee, WI, on October 13, 1919, to Robert and Marian (McDevitt) Johnston, he lived in Kenosha from early childhood.  He attended Lincoln schools and Kenosha High School, graduating in 1938.  In 1941, he married Lorraine Boswell, who died in 1968; in 1976, Dick married Marjorie Friedl (Boutott).

After high school, Dick worked at the Simmon's main office and Obertin's Florists.  In 1940, he joined the Army Air Corps and retired from the Air Force in 1960 as a Master Sergeant.  Among his many stateside assignments, he served as Commandant of the Army and Air Force Recruiting Station in Kenosha from 1951-56.  His overseas assignments included the Philippine Islands and Japan.

Subsequent to his retirement from the Air Force, Dick worked for Office Outfitters, KAT, and American Motors, retiring from AMC in 1980.  He was a former member of the Elk's Club and the Eagles Club, Moose Club, the Lutheran Brotherhood and the Senior Golf League.  As a member of Bradford Alumni Association, Dick served for six years on the Board of Directors and on several reunion committees.  His hobbies included calligraphy, woodworking, golfing, working on golf equipment, recording and listening to music, making personalized greeting cards and creating computer graphics.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; three daughters:  Carol Hansen (Victor) Grey of Concord, CA, Cathy (Joseph) Petrusek of LaGrande, OR, and Susan (Daniel) Cisler of Kenosha; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Johnston of Sarasota, FL.

A Memorial service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2006 at 11:00AM at Proko Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00AM until the time of services at Proko Funeral Home.  Interment will be private with full military honors.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Kenosha Achievement Center would be appreciated by the family.
