Phil Sander - Class Of 1926

Phil H. Sander, age 99, died Saturday March 11, 2006 at his residence.  Born on September 10, 1906 in Kenosha, he was the son of the late Henry and Sophie (Jasmund) Sander.  A life-long Kenosha resident, he was educated in the schools of Kenosha.

Phil was employed by the Simmons Company until 1962 and then American Motors until 1972.  From 1972 until 1985, he served as the director of the Kenosha County Historical Society.

Phil was a member of Unity Lodge No. 367 for over 65 years.  He was a life member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and served as its chairman from 1965 to 1975.  He also was a life member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.  He belonged to the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, Wisconsin Archaeology Society, Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, the Nature Conservancy (Chiwaukee Prairie) and the National Woodcarvers Association.  Phil was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990 by the Bradford Alumni Association.

Phil enjoyed wood crafting, hunting, fishing, archeology, writing, and painting. He loved his hometown of Kenosha, and was involved in many activities that promoted Kenosha and its history.  He designed the National Passenger Pigeon Monument located in Wyalusing State Park near Prairie du Chien, WI.

Phil is survived by a nephew, Henry G. Hartnek, and his wife, Linda Dee Hartnek, of Sonoita, AZ; a niece, Phyllis L. Kordecki, and her husband. Peter Kordecki, of Hanover Park IL; great nieces Kristen and Karen Kordecki and well as many friends whom will miss him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ella Hartnek.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 10:30AM at the Unity Lodge 367 (4320 Washington Rd., Kenosha).  Visitation will be from 10:00AM until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to one of the following would be appreciated:  Chiwaukee Prairie Preservation Fund or Hawthorn Hollow.
